Plan International Kenya gives over 1,000 goats to locals to improve means of livelihoods.

About 900 families in Nyakach Constituency have received both local and high breed goats from Plan International Kenya as a means improving their livelihoods.

Plan International Kenya Area Manager in charge of Nyanza and Western Kenya Region Raphael Aoko says this has been part of the organization undertaking emergency recovery project especially in Nyakach area which is prone to floods during the heavy rains.

Addressing the press during the distribution of the goats to the families, Aoko said during the last season of the long rains which was too much, the organization initiated the emergency recovery project in Nyakach area as a result of the perennial floods that displaced a number of families and properties lost.
He says they have been doing a number of activities as a result of the emergency recovery project ranging from giving fast maturing seeds like rice, millet and sorghum, support to cash transfer which has been given to 900 families at a cost of sh 12,000 per household.

He adds that the other the emergency recovery project in the area is the distribution of goats which they are currently undertaking where they are giving 900 local female goats and 120 token Burg Hybrid goats which are aimed at improving the breeding.

“Today, we are giving part of the 900 local female goats and 120 token burg goats hybrid goats which are meant to improve the breeding of goats here,” Aoko says.

He says the goats are being distributed in the two areas of Lower Kadiang’a and Sango Rota within South West Nyakach.

Aoko says already the beneficiaries of the project on distributing the goats have been trained on how to take care of the goats.

“We have trained the various beneficiaries of this project and also build their capacities where they have been told on how to take care of the animals at home,” Aoko adds.

He says they have also been told on how to construct the houses for the goats, adding that the organization had inspected the various houses built for the goats before they were handed over the animals to be under their care.

He further says the organization has put a robust monitoring where it will keep on checking the progress of the project to ensure it is successful.

“We have a robust monitoring plan to ensure the success of this project and this we are doing through the Chiefs and their assistants and the Group’s leader who will ensure that the goats are under proper care,” he further adds.

He says there will be a monthly meeting with the beneficiaries of the project so as to see the progress made so far.

Assistant Chief of Lower Kadiang’a Sub-Location Reagan Ouma Otieno has urged the residents who have benefitted from the project to take good care of the goats.

He urged them not to engage in selling the goats they have been given, adding that they will be on the look out to ensure that the goats are safe.

Rose Achieng Ngeso from West Koguta says she is very happy with the project, adding that she will ensure that the project is a success because it will help in improving their livelihoods.

“I have received four dairy goats which are local ones and one Token hybrid goat we will share with my neigbour so as to help in improving the breed for our goats.I am really thankful for this noble project from Plan Kenya International,” Achieng says.
