30 students graduate after a sponsored tailoring course in Nyando

A total of 30 students have successfully graduated after completing a one year- sponsored course on tailoring and dress making in Nyando constituency.

The 30 students whom mostly are orphans have been undergoing the one year training at Nyando Tailored in love.

Addressing the gathering during the graduation ceremony held within the Nyando National Government Constituency Development Fund office’s compound, Nyando Member of Parliament Jared okello said the initiative is a partnership program between two US Based organizations known as  Shadows of his wings and Houses of Hope which is fully sponsoring the one year-tailoring course.

Okello says the whole program is fully sponsored at about shs 8.3million for a year, adding that this caters for the costs of material for training the 30 students, provision of lunch among other logistics like hiring tutors, cooks and other subordinate staff that help within the institution.

The Lawmaker says upon completing their training, each trained student is given a new sewing machine, materials that will help them to jump start their businesses upon completing their training, adding that these cost about shs 2.4 million.

On the criteria for picking those who benefit from the course, the lawmaker says each of the five wards within the constituency produce 6 people especially girls who are orphans, adding even those who have parents but are very poor are considered for the opportunity.

“We normally consider orphans from our five wards within the constituency but we also give chances to very poor girls whose parents are still alive because we consider their parents economic statuses,” Okello says.

Okello says this is a way of empowering the less fortunate people within the constituency especially the girl child.

The Nyando Member of Parliament adds that already the third batch of 30 students to undergoing the training have been picked and will soon commence their training at the facility.

He further says the training will be scaled up in order to cater for more students so as to benefit from the program.

He urges the beneficiaries to keep on exchanging the ideas on what they have learnt as colleagues so that they be able to prosper in life after their training.

This year’s graduation is the second one after the first batch graduated last year in March where a similar number graduated after being sponsored for the program.
