Atwoli calls for speedy investigations on Kakamega school stampede

Central Organizations of Trade Union Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called on the Government to immediately launch investigation into the incident in which 14 primary school children died yesterday in Kakamega County.

Atwoli says the Police should carry out proper investigations so as to ascertain what actually transpired that led to the killing of the 14 pupils from Kakamega Primary School leaving about 40 others injured.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today, Atwoli has also appealed to the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Education, Science and Technology Prof George Magoha to make sure thorough investigations done following the incident.

Atwoli has also appealed to the Cabinet Secretary to ensure that the institution is fully refurbished by levying the Business community in Kakamega town to adequately fund such.

“We have very rich people in Kakamega town who can fund the refurbishment of the institution. In other countries people volunteer and they don’t rely on 100 percent government funding,” Atwoli adds.

He says the school should have the necessary facilities needed to aid learning, adding that the institution should have various exits that can help to evacuate pupils in case of any eventuality.

14 Pupils of Kakamega Primary School yesterday died as a result of stampede as 39 others sustained injuries.

The school has now been closed for a week following the incident as top government officials led by the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto visited it to assess the situation.
