Kisumu’s Civil
Societies tells Nyong’o to fix problems facing health in the County
A SECTION of the Civil Society Members have asked Kisumu
Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o to immediately help in fixing problems that
have been bedeviling the health sector.
The Civil Societies members led by the Kisumu City Residents
Voice Chairman Audi Ogada say Governor Nyong’o should first appoint a competent
County Executive Committee Member in charge of health and Sanitation arguing
that the current CEC is not equal to the task of managing the health docket in
Kisumu County.
Addressing the press in Kisumu today where they
have registered their displeasure with the Current administration of Prof Nyong’o
of it alleged failure to tackle the problems facing the health sector as well
as other issues affecting the residents of the County, the members led by Audi
Ogada, Michael Otieno Nyaguti and John Obure said most residents are not happy
with the Governance status of Kisumu County.
They claim that the Universal Health Coverage in Kisumu
County has totally collapsed and no one is addressing it, adding that the
County Government of Kisumu should account for the funds which was disbursed
for the UHC program on a pilot basis.
They want the County Government to fully equip the health
facilities within the county with all that is needed for them to function
properly.
On issue of the pending bills that has been in the public
limelight after the contractors and suppliers demanded to be paid, they said
there the county Government should release itemized pending bills.
On his part, John Obure says there is no need for the Health
function to be taken back to the National Government from the County Government
of Kisumu but there should be appointment of competent people to run the health
sector.
“The only problem that is there is only the laxity at the
current county Government,” Obure says.
Kisumu City Residents
Voice Chairman Audi Ogada calls for the disbandment of the Board of Management
at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital because it is
composed of those who are incompetent.
Ogada says the current CEC in charge of Health and
Sanitation should be given another docket to run which is equivalent to her
professional qualifications.
“Nyong’o had a very good manifesto when he was campaigning
and it is time for him to fully implement it,” Ogada says.
Ogada urges the Governor to immediately crack the whip
against some of the officers working at the county Government accused of being
corrupt.
The Civil Societies have also challenged the Ethics and
Anti-Corruption Commission tell the outcomes of the investigations it has been
conducting both at the Executive and Assembly wing of the County Government of
Kisumu.
“EACC has been doing investigations here in regard to
suspected cases of corruption but there is no outcome of these investigations
at all,” they further say.
They further challenged the County Assembly of Kisumu to
play actively its oversight role over the Executive wing of the County Government.
“We don’t want the issue of praise and worship by MCAs at
the County Assembly of Kisumu. They should play their oversight role diligently,”
they say.
Efforts to get comments from the Director of Governor’s
Press Unit Aloice Ager bore no fruit as he did not answer a message sent to him
to respond by the time of going to press.
