Kisumu’s Civil Societies tells Nyong’o to fix problems facing health in the County

A SECTION of the Civil Society Members have asked Kisumu Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o to immediately help in fixing problems that have been bedeviling the health sector.

The Civil Societies members led by the Kisumu City Residents Voice Chairman Audi Ogada say Governor Nyong’o should first appoint a competent County Executive Committee Member in charge of health and Sanitation arguing that the current CEC is not equal to the task of managing the health docket in Kisumu County.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today where they have registered their displeasure with the Current administration of Prof Nyong’o of it alleged failure to tackle the problems facing the health sector as well as other issues affecting the residents of the County, the members led by Audi Ogada, Michael Otieno Nyaguti and John Obure said most residents are not happy with the Governance status of Kisumu County.

They claim that the Universal Health Coverage in Kisumu County has totally collapsed and no one is addressing it, adding that the County Government of Kisumu should account for the funds which was disbursed for the UHC program on a pilot basis.

They want the County Government to fully equip the health facilities within the county with all that is needed for them to function properly.

On issue of the pending bills that has been in the public limelight after the contractors and suppliers demanded to be paid, they said there the county Government should release itemized pending bills.
On his part, John Obure says there is no need for the Health function to be taken back to the National Government from the County Government of Kisumu but there should be appointment of competent people to run the health sector.

“The only problem that is there is only the laxity at the current county Government,” Obure says.

 Kisumu City Residents Voice Chairman Audi Ogada calls for the disbandment of the Board of Management at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital because it is composed of those who are incompetent.

Ogada says the current CEC in charge of Health and Sanitation should be given another docket to run which is equivalent to her professional qualifications.

“Nyong’o had a very good manifesto when he was campaigning and it is time for him to fully implement it,” Ogada says.

Ogada urges the Governor to immediately crack the whip against some of the officers working at the county Government accused of being corrupt.

The Civil Societies have also challenged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission tell the outcomes of the investigations it has been conducting both at the Executive and Assembly wing of the County Government of Kisumu.

“EACC has been doing investigations here in regard to suspected cases of corruption but there is no outcome of these investigations at all,” they further say.

They further challenged the County Assembly of Kisumu to play actively its oversight role over the Executive wing of the County Government.

“We don’t want the issue of praise and worship by MCAs at the County Assembly of Kisumu. They should play their oversight role diligently,” they say.

Efforts to get comments from the Director of Governor’s Press Unit Aloice Ager bore no fruit as he did not answer a message sent to him to respond by the time of going to press.
