THE Issue of Boda Boda Riders in Kisumu to pay monthly tax of shs 500 can be renegotiated by the stakeholders, county Government officials in Kisumu say.

The officials say the County Government of Kisumu is willing to carry out a renegotiation about the move with the Boda Boda riders within the entire county.

Addressing the Members of the Mlimani Boda Boda Sacco Limited during the launch of a vehicle for transport Business which the Sacco recently bought through a bank loan, Acting County Executive Committee member in charge of Transport Dickson Obungu said the county will sit down with the Boda boda riders so as to see a way forward on the revenue collection from them in form of tax.

Obungu says the Boda Boda Riders is a very important sector within Kisumu County hence can’t be ignored, adding  that the County Government under the leadership of Prof. Anyang Nyong’o really recognizes the role played by Boda Boda riders in their contributions towards the economy in Kisumu.

“We are going to sit down and see on an easy way of collecting the revenue from the Boda Boda because this is a very important sector in our county,” Obungu says.

He says as a member of the Revenue Committee within the County Government of Kisumu he will present the Boda Boda riders’ sentiment on pay tax to the Committee.

Obungu who is also the CEC in charge of Physical Planning, Lands and urban Development hinted that the County Government of Kisumu will give shs 250,000 to boda boda riders in form of revolving funds.

Chief Officer in charge of Women, Youth, Women, Gender and People with Disability Affairs Haggai Kadiri says both the County Government of Kisumu and Boda Boda Riders will work together.

He says the Boda Boda business is an important economic arm within the county and should be supported.

“We can’t succeed without boda Boda industry within Kisumu County hence the need to support it because one can’t succeed without the boda boda industry,’ Kadiri says.

He also hinted that the revolving fund will be provided to the Boda Boda riders who are in organized Saccos with good leadership right from the ward level.

On the issue of tax to Boda Boda riders, he says there is need to do it in an amicable way so that all stakeholders are okay with it.

Market/Mlimani Ward representative Seth Ochieng Kanga urges the boda Boda riders to do their activities within the confines of the laws.

On the tax to the boda boda riders urged the county Government to take the proposal of the riders into consideration before it is fully implemented.

Kisumu County Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union Willis Aketch says the riders have agreed to pay the tax but there should be a proper renegotiation about the issue.

He says there are about 70,000 Boda Boda Operators in Kisumu County which should not be ignored in terms of their contributions towards the economy of Kisumu County.

Kisumu County Boda Boda Coordinator Nelson Odire says there is need to coordinate a meeting at a ward level between Boda Boda riders and the county Government of Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o on the issue of tax for Boda Boda Riders.

“Dialogue is very important and we must engage in it as boda boda riders in Kisumu County with our Governor,” Odire says.
