Africities Summit in Ksm surpasses target, get 11,000 delegates

THE Ninth Edition of the Africities Summit that has been held in Kisumu for the last five days has surpassed the target of delegates attending it and get more than 10,000 guests.

The Summit that has been held in Kenya for the second time has now seen an estimated 11,000 delegates registered for it when it begun on May 17 Tuesday last week till today Saturday May 21,2022.

This is the first time the summit is being held at an intermediary City which is Kisumu in Kenya and in 2006, Africities Summit was held in Nairobi.

Addressing the press after the official closure of the event today at Mamboleo Show Ground, the United Cities and Local Authorities in African Secretary General Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi said they expected about 8,000 delegates but have surpassed the target by getting 3,000 more delegates who have attended the Summit.

Mbassi says the Summit that has been held for the first time in an intermediary city has been a successful one, adding that it is an eye opener that Intermediary cities in Africa can hold such a Summit successfully.

He says the Africities being held in Kisumu as intermediary city is a land mark where Africa will really move on with its transformation agenda.

Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o says they have learnt very good lessons that include being done successfully if everyone plays his or her part.

Nyong’o says with the guidance from the United Cities and Local Governments in Africa {UCLGA} which is the main organizer of the Summit, Kisumu City has managed to hold the Summit successfully.

The Kisumu Governor says with a lot of faith and actions, they have made to host the Summit.

He says all the stakeholders have done very much to ensure that the event is a success.

“Planning is very important but Planning without action leads to nothing Governor Nyong’o. This is the biggest lesson we have learnt and I am sure it will be taken to other intermediary cities while planning for future Africities summit,” Nyong’o says.

Kenya’s Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa says it is very possible for any intermediary city to host the event of such magnitude.

He says the biggest benefit Kenya has gotten is to have the world discover Kisumu City and its environment.

“Many come to Nairobi and go back without knowing Kisumu. The last first days has seen many visit Kisumu for the Summit and this is great indeed,” he says.

He says the future of Africa lies in the roadmap created by the Africities Summit, adding that Kisumu will opening to other intermediary cities to host such like an event.

The African Cities{Africities} is a pan-African conference held every three years since 1998 when the first meeting was held in Abidjan, Cote d’ voire.

It is being convened by the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa’s {UCLG-A}.

With its headquarters at Rabat in Morocco, the Africities brings together the leadership of Cities {Mayors}, Sub-National and Local Governments with the aim of improving living standards of their citizens.

The hosting of the Africities Summit rotates between five African Sub-Regional Blocks.

This Ninth Edition of the Africities Summit has been held in Kisumu as an intermediary city from May 17 to 21 this year.

The Eight Edition of the summit was held in Marrakech in Morocco in 2018.

In 2006, Kenya hosted the Africities Summit for the first time in Nairobi and this year in May, it has hosted it for the second time in Kisumu which is not its Capital City but an intermediary City after Kenya won the bid to host it in the year 2021 November.

The effects of Corona virus pandemic made it pushed to May this year.

This year’s Africities Summit theme has been the role of intermediary cities of Africa in the implementation of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and the African Union Agenda 2063.

The Africities Summit has two major roles that include defining appropriate shared strategies in order to improve the living conditions of the people at the local level.

The other one is to contribute to the integration, peace and unity of Africa from its territories.
