Conference on
Sustainable Waste Management to be held in Kisumu
A Conference
aimed at discussing the issues of sustainable waste management in Kisumu will
be held later this month after the Africities conference that kicks off next
week on Tuesday.
The
Conference dubbed on Multi stakeholder conference on Sustainable Waste
management will be held on May 26 and 27 at a venue which is yet to be
disclosed.
Addressing
the meeting during Complex Urban System for Sustainability and Health {CUSSH}
Journalists training on Sustainable Waste Management, Coordinator for the
Community Empowerment and Media Initiative in Kisumu Bernard Okebe said the
conference will be held a few days after the Africities conference that kicks
off next week on Tuesday till Saturday.
Okebe says
the Conference on Sustainable Waste Management will attract more than 100
stakeholders who will be in attendance.
The
Coordinator for the Community Empowerment and Media Initiative in Kisumu says the
discussions will be purely on issues of sustainable waste management within the
informal settlement in Kisumu City.
The Complex
Urban System for Sustainability and Health {CUSSH}, the Community Empowerment
and Media Initiative in Kisumu, African Population and Health Research Center {APHRC}
have been partnering with Kisumu based Journalists so as to highlight on issues
of sustainable waste management in the four informal settlements within Kisumu
City namely, Nyalenda, Obunga, Manyatta and Kondele area.
Already in
the four informal settlements, there have been successful stories on
sustainable waste management that include the youth managing waste to earn a
living which have been highlighted by the Journalists.
The
Complex Urban Systems for Sustainability and Health{CUSSH} which started in
2018 is a four year International Research project working in 13 partner
organizations across four continents to help cities develop in ways which
improve population health and environment sustainability.
The
Cities include London in United Kingdom, Rennes in France, Kisumu and Nairobi
in Kenya and Beijing and Ningbo in China where the project’s work will focus
both on local priorities and city-scale actions aligned with plenary health.
Through
the close partnerships with local organizations, CUSSH will learn how policy
decisions to achieve health and sustainability goals can be improved and
accelerated.
To do
this, its process include steps that it hope will provide evidence essential to
achieving population-level changes in areas that include energy provision,
Transport infrastructure, green infrastructure, Water and Sanitation and
Housing.
