Kisumu to have 1800 affordable houses at Makasembo Estate

AN estimated 1800 affordable houses will be available in Kisumu at Makasembo Estate near the Kisumu National Polytechnic.

Local Authorities Provident Fund {Lapfund} Board of Directors Chairperson Celestine Kailuku says the project being done through the Lapfund in collaboration with the County Government of Kisumu will see 650 houses in its first phase.

Addressing guests and residents of Kisumu during the ground breaking ceremony presided over by Former Prime Minister and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance Coalition Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga, Kailuku said the project will finally realize 1,800 modern affordable houses within the said estate.

Kailuku says the Makasembo Estate in Kisumu used to have 130 houses, adding that the project will now have more modern houses that will cater for more residents of Kisumu.

“This Ground breaking ceremony on affordable houses at Makasembo Estate in Kisumu signifies the renewal and the rebirth of the Estate,” she says.

She says the project will help in addressing the increase demand of affordable houses in Kisumu City and its environs.

Kailuku has described the issue as an exciting journey between the County Government of Kisumu and the Lapfund to implement and set up low cost and decent housing for the Kisumu City residents, adding that this is towards supporting the National Government Big Four Agenda on affordable Housing.

She adds that the Lapfund Board is fully committed in ensuring that it prudently invest and manage its members’ savings.

Former Prime Minister and the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance Coalition Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga says the issue of shortage of housing in the country should be addressed immediately.

“What is being done here today during this ground breaking ceremony for the affordable housing at Makasembo Estate in Kisumu is a way of responding to the need of having affordable housing for our people who migrate from rural to urban areas,” Odinga says.

He says there is need to have a proper land development across the country which will see the issues of affordable housing, health facilities and other social amenities addressed.

Odinga says the issue of the introduction of the Housing levy is very good indeed and should be supported, adding that the current Government of President Uhuru Kenyatta tried to introduced it but was opposed by some people who did not understand the whole issue.

“Such fund like  the Housing Levy Fund where an employee contribute 1.5 percent and the employer also 1.5 percent then goes into a pull of fund which can help in rolling out a massive housing development across the country,” Odinga adds.

Nyanza Regional Coordinator Magu Mutindika has urged the National Land Commission to repossess all the public land grabbed by the private developers in Kisumu so that more affordable houses are constructed for the residents of Kisumu City.

“Anybody from the National land Commission should repossess any grabbed public land in Kisumu City without fail,” he says.

He calls upon the County Government of Kisumu to ensure that Kisumu is properly planned.

The Makasembo Estate affordable Housing project was launched nearly eight months ago but its ground breaking ceremony was done yesterday that now will see the construction of 650 modern houses in the old Makasembo Estate.

The Estate was named after the Central Nyanza Senator the Late Dickson Oruko Makasembo.
