Politicians urged to
take leading role in sustainable waste management
Politicians have been told to take
a leading role on issues of sustainable waste management.
Director of Climate Change at the County Government of
Kisumu Evans Gichana says issues of waste management
and politics can never be separated.
He says this can only be possible
if the initiative is begun at the grass root level where various households are
told from that level on how to manage the waste sustainably.
Addressing the press during a media workshop of sustainable
waste management organized by Complex Urban Systems for Sustainable Health {CUSSH}
project in conjunction with African Population and
Health Research Center {APHRC} and Community Empowerment and Media Initiative
in Kisumu {CEMI}, Gichana said all the stakeholders need to come together and
have a common approach on the issues of managing wastes within their areas.
Gichana says there should be good
strategies in managing the waste in growing urban and cities, adding that as
the world approaches 2050s and the population is growing, issues of sustainable
waste management should be a major focus.
“One of the ways of doing this is
to recycle the waste that is being generated at the various level that include
the grass root level,” Gichana says.
At the same time, the County Government of Kisumu have begun
the process of developing the Climate Change Integrated Action Plan.
Gichana says the Climate Change Action Plan which is being
developed will be a five year one covering the year 2022 to 2027.
Gichana said already the process
of public participation on the document has been carried out from the 35 wards
within Kisumu County to get the views of members of the public over it.
He says the document will form
part of the plan towards addressing issues of climate change in Kisumu County.
Gichana says the document will be
validated and thereafter be available to the public since it is a public
document.
“In the past few weeks, we have been
collecting the views of the public on what information is needed to be in this
document and we have found very good information that will be included in the
final document,” Gichana says.
