Public service Vehicles Drivers urged to be careful this festive season.

ALL Drivers of Public Service Vehicles operating in Nyanza region have been urged to be very careful not to cause road accidents during this festive season.

The Nyanza Regional Police Coordinator Leonard Katana says a number of drivers of the public service vehicles do normally over speed so as to reach their destinations faster and make many trips during festive seasons to make more money only to end up causing road accidents where passengers are killed.

Speaking to this writer at his office in Kisumu, Katana has urged all the PSVs drivers to be extra cautious during this festive season so as to avoid causing accident which can result into passengers’ deaths.

Katana says most of the road accidents are caused by human errors which can be easily avoided.
He says he will ensure that the Highways within the region are safe for travels by deploying more traffic police officers to man the road and ensure traffic rules and regulations are adhered to at all times.

“We will ensure that traffic police officers are highly alert to fully enforce the traffic rules and regulations,” Katana says.

He says among the things the Traffic police officers will be checking is carrying of excess passengers both by private and public service vehicles.

“The use of extra seats known as sambaza in public service vehicles to carry excess passengers is not going to be tolerated  at all cost,” Katana adds.

Katana says as the regional police coordinator, he will ensure that only vehicles licensed to carry passengers do so but not the ones unlicensed.

Katana has also advised other road users to be careful as well during this period, adding that they must be mindful of other road users.

The Nyanza regional police boss at the same time has reminded those people who hire private cars to ensure they drive such cars using a valid driving license.

“There is a tendency where people hire private vehicles to drive especially during this festive season but they do not have valid driving licenses and I want to warn them that should such be found then the law will take its cause,” Katana further says.

He also urges all the drivers to ensure that they strictly drive at 50 kilometers per hour while approaching any urban center.

Katana has further asked public service vehicles operators not to take advantage of the festive season and hike bus fares for the passengers.
