Shs7 billion water
Project to be undertaken in Kisumu County.
An ambitious water project is set to be undertaken in Kisumu
County at an estimated shs 7 billion.
The mega water project which is known as Victoria Water and
Sanitation program is being financed by French Development Agency, the Kenyan Government,
grant from the European Union, European Investment Bank will be implemented by
the Lake Victoria South Water Services Board.
Speaking in Kisumu after attending the Kisumu County Water
Investment Conference organized by the Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company, the
Lake Victoria South Water Services Board Chief Executive Officer Engineer
Petronillah Ogut said the project target mega investment in the water and
sanitation sector within Kisumu County.
The LVSWSB Chief Executive Officer says currently a study is
being conducted after the project will kick off from next year.
She says the studies being conducted under the program is
aimed at ensuring that water will be brought from River Yala in Siaya County by
gravity so as to help in addressing the water deficit at Kajulu area.
She says the water from River Yala will be through gravity
hence no cost, adding this will ensure that there will be adequate water and to
minimize the cost of getting water from Lake Victoria.
She says the mega water and sanitation project will also
ensure that towns within Kisumu County such as Ahero, Kisian, Daraja Mbili,
Maseno and other smaller towns within the county get adequate water under the
project.
“Basically, we have embarked on studies on this mega water
project so as to ensure that bulk water will be supplied from River Yala in
Siaya County so as to help in addressing
the deficit in Kajulu area,” Engineer Ogut says.
Eng. Ogut says under the project, a robust new sewer network
of 33.5 Kilometers will be constructed, adding that the project also intends to
expand the distribution network of water in Kisumu City.
She adds that the project also target to construct a new
waste water treatment plant at Otonglo area in Kisumu West Constituency.
Ogut says the increasing population needs sustainable water
resources and water services hence the need for a robust water and sanitation
within the county.
She says under the new water and sanitation project, there
will also be a capacity building to Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company so as
to reduce non revenue water and see a way of providing water to people in the
informal settlements.
She says they will come up with a robust water resources
master plan which will help in looking at issues of water conservation in the
catchment areas, water quality in the Lake Victoria and water services to the
people.
“We want to ensure that the people get water but with the
right investment in the water and sanitation,” she adds.
