Suspect nabbed in connection to water theft in Kisumu.

The inspection unit of Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company has apprehended a suspect for illegal water use.

The suspect, who also operates a registered water kiosk in Upper railways estate of Kisumu, had created a by-pass where he would get water illegally from KIWASCO’s main water line.

According to KIWASCO Managing Director Thomas Odongo in a press statement, the suspect was discovered when firm’s officials were undertaking their routine inspection activities and he warned the officials not to excavate next to his path since there were power lines passing underground.

The Managing Director says, the officials then raised suspicion and embarked on a mission which led to discovery of the illegal water connection.

Odongo says company suspects that the stealing has been going on for over 2 years but they are yet to compile a report on the exact losses made.

He however says, preliminary figures indicate that the estimated loss could be over Ksh 300,000 per month.

He says cases of illegal water connections in Kisumu have been rampant with majority of them being reported in Obunga, Bandani, Nyamasaria, Migosi, Kanyamedha, Riat, Kaloleni, Nyalenda railways, Mamboleo and Nyalenda estates.

He adds the company has an enforcement team in place that looks out for cases of illegal water connections.

“We urge members of the public and our esteemed customers to report cases of illegal water connections as they are the major contributors to high Non-revenue water, which currently stands at 36%,” the Managing Director says.
