We won’t support a Referendum without the Health Service Commission, Medic says.

THERE is need to have a Commission in charge of health issues across the country which is anchored in the constitution when the National Referendum is held to change the current constitution, an expert on health issues has said.

Dr. James Obondi, an orthopedic Surgeon consultant says it was wrong to come up with a constitution in the year 2010 without a health service commission.

Addressing the press at his office in Kisumu, Dr. Obondi says the Health Service Commission when anchored in the constitution, it will help to address the issue of wellbeing of all the health workers across the country.

He says health workers across the country will not support a referendum to change the constitution without a Health Service Commission in it.

The medic says already talks are ongoing among the different health workers to see how to ensure the Health Service Commission is fully anchored in the current constitution when it will be changed through a referendum.

He says the Commission will greatly help in the issue of employment of the health workers across the country in line with the scheme.

“Currently, health workers across the country are currently not being employed according to the scheme hence the need to have the Health Service Commission anchored in the constitution when a referendum is done to change it,” Dr. Obondi says.

He says the commission will also help in the issues of promotion, hiring and firing of the health workers.

The medic says there support for the National Referendum to change will depend on putting the Health Service Commission in the constitution.

“Our support as medics on the national referendum will be based on including the health service commission in the constitution and without that let none expect our support for it,” Dr. Obondi adds.

He says what is important is to come up with policies in employing the health workers across the country, adding that the commission will greatly help in this.

“Health workers are people who are educated and a proper policy in employing them should be developed and only the Health Service Commission can do this better,” he further says.
