Nyanza clergy urges IEBC to give periodic presidential election results before a final one.

A section of Clergy in Nyanza region has urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission {IEBC} to give periodic results on the presidential election before giving a final one.

The clergy led by the Chairman of the Nyanza Council of Church leaders Archbishop Dr. Washington Ogonyo Ngede say in a press statement that they strongly condemn the recent announcement by the IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba that the commission will not give periodic presidential election results but a final at the Commission’s national tallying center at the Bomas of Kenya.

In a press statement to the newsrooms, the clergy claims that the issue where the commission has to wait for all the presidential election results from all the 290 constituencies across the country and announcing only the final results is not only worrying but also absurd.

“This, we are viewing it as a way of wanting to rig the elections in favor of one political divide and the peace-loving Kenyans will not accept the results if elections are rigged in such a manner,” they say.

They urged the electoral body to do its work as prescribed by the law and should not be seen to be introducing some laws ahead of the polls which is contrary to the electoral laws.

“During the electioneering period like this, peace-loving Kenyan citizens who will be casting their votes would like to watch the provisional results for the election from all corners of the country via the media especially on the provisional presidential election results from each of the 290 constituencies countrywide,” they adds.

They say the announcement of the periodic results for any election is done even in United States, United Kingdom, Germany, India, Japan and China among other countries in the world including those in Africa.

The clergy say IEBC has been providing  periodic results on the presidential election in the previous General elections, urging the commission to tell Kenyans what has changed that has made it to only wanting to only announce the final results of the presidential election.

They further say as the clergy they also want to know the progress during the voting, vote tallying, Transmission and announcement of the election results including the presidential election results.

“IEBC should come out and convince Kenyans the reason as to why it must only wait and announce only the final results of the presidential election as some people  read mischief in this hence should be clear,” they add.
