Political goodwill will
enable Parliament to implement two thirds gender rule, MPs says.
POLITICAL Goodwill will enable the current Members of
Parliament to pass the two thirds Gender rule, a section of MPs have said.
The Members of Parliament who are members of the
Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs have said that lack of
political goodwill has made the two thirds Gender rule not being passed by the
previous Parliament.
Address the press in Kisumu after collecting views from a
number of residents in Nyanza region yesterday, the MPs led by Kisumu West
Member of Parliament John Olago Aluoch said they are optimistic that the bill
on two thirds gender rule will be passed by the current Parliament due to good
political will which is there currently.
The lawmakers say during last Parliament, one side of the
House became suspicious that a political divide would take credit to it when it
was about to be passed hence making it not to be passed.
“The reason why it has been very difficult to pass this bill
was because of serious political differences we have had in the past but this
time around, there is goodwill from our political leaders as well as from this
committee, “said MP Olago who was the team leader.
He said the Committee will sit down and prepare a report
based on the views collected from members of the public.
Olago adds that after preparing the report, the Committee
will present the report the Speaker of the National Assembly Mr. Justin Mituri.
“The Committee will sit down and write a report after which
we will present it to the Speaker who will present it to the House for
discussions.
A member of the Committee Ben Momanyi, MP for Borabu said
the committee will consider all the views collected so far from members of the
public.
Other Members of the Committee who were present during the
meeting include Peter Opondo Kaluma of Homa Bay Town, Antony Kiai among others.
