Kisumu to have shs 448M ultra-modern County Assembly by December next year

AN Ultra-Modern County Assembly in Kisumu will be ready for use by the end of next year, Speaker of the County Assembly of Kisumu Jack Oraro has revealed.

Oraro says the Ultra-Modern County assembly of Kisumu will take two years to be completed from now.

Addressing the press during the Ground breaking ceremony held today within Mlimani near Tom Mboya Labour College, Oraro said the Ksh 448 million building is expected to offer adequate working space and a more conducive working environment for Members of the County Assembly and Staff.

He says the new building will accommodate 64 Members of the County Assembly of Kisumu plus the entire staff of the County Assembly.

Currently, the County Assembly of Kisumu has a total of 48 MCAs who include 35 elected ones, 12 nominated and the Speaker of the County Assembly.

The Speaker says apart from the Chambers and offices, the building will also comprise a cafeteria, gymnasium, Members’ lounge and a playing ground for indoor games.

The Speaker says there was an issue in the previous County Assembly in the year 2014 that led to the new County Assembly not to be constructed.

He says the issues included court cases, land issues as well as procurement procedures.

He says the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) has provided a ceiling capping the total cost of construction of County Assemblies in the country to Ksh.500 million with a capacity between 30 and 60 MCAs.

Oraro says the land in which the new county Assembly of Kisumu is being constructed has been provided by the current executive wing of the county Government of Kisumu.

He says the building will have four floors where its chambers will be in the third floor.

“Whether we will be there as Members of the County Assembly of Kisumu or not, this project should be completed,” he says.

Oraro at the same time said the Speaker's official residence is almost at 90% complete and will be soon occupied, adding that its construction is shs 34million.
