Kisumu’s CBD Remains peaceful as Supreme Court uphold Ruto’s win

The Kisumu City Central Business District has today remained peaceful as the Highest Court in Kenya rules that the election of Dr. William Ruto as the fifth President has been valid as conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The Kenyan Chief Justice Martha Koome while reading the ruling said the Court decision has been unanimous by all the seven Supreme Court Judges.

A spot check by this writer immediately after the Supreme Court ruling today at around 1:50pm where the seven petitions that were seeking to overturn Ruto’s election as the fifth President of Kenya have been dismissed, it has been business as usual as residents went on their businesses with a number of shops open for today’s business.

Even most hotels within the Central Business District remain operational for the better part of the day and customers were seen trooping in to have meals and drinks.

At the New Victoria Hotel along Oginga Odinga Street, business went on without closing the premise ahead of the Supreme Court ruling and thereafter.

Customers within the hotel were seen watching the Supreme Court ruling while having their meals and drinks.

Operations at the major Supermarkets were ongoing as customers were seen getting in to purchase items at the time the Supreme Court’s ruling was being made and thereafter.

The issue of Kisumu City and its environs remaining calm before, during and after the polls have been prayers for a number of stakeholders including Civil Societies activists, Kisumu Committee of Eminent Persons, Women Elders from Nyanza Region and members of the faith based organizations.

On Friday last week, women Elders from Nyanza region castigated the security alert that was issued by the United States Embassy in Nairobi on Thursday last week to its citizens asking them not to travel to Kisumu on the day the Supreme Court made the rulings arguing that violence could erupt after such a ruling.

The elders led by Dr. Phoebe Nyawala and retired politician Phoebe Asiyo urged the residents to continue remain peaceful regardless of the decision the Supreme Court was to make.

The Current Deputy President Dr William Ruto, now President-Elect is set to be Sworn-in on the first Tuesday after the Supreme Court of Kenya Ruling that has uphold his election as the Fifth President of Kenya.

In this case, the Swearing-in of the new President-Elect Dr. William Ruto will now be on Tuesday next week on September 13 this year to take over the reigns as the Fifth President from the outgoing President Uhuru Kenya in accordance to Article 141{2}{b} of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Azimio la Umoja one Kenya Alliance Coalition Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga has said they respect the Supreme Court decision.

“We have taken note of the decision of the Supreme Court on the Presidential election held on August 9, 2022.We have always stood for the rule of the law and the constitution. In this regard, we respect the opinion of the court although we vehemently disagree with their decision today,” said part of the Press statement from Raila Odinga Presidential Secretariat.
