Mobile legal aid clinics launched in Ksm to help educate residents 

A MOBILE Legal Aid program has been launched in Kisumu to cater for free legal services to the residents.

The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) in partnership with Program for Legal Aid Delivery in Kenya (PLEAD) European Union (EU) representative have launched the mobile legal aid clinic at Nyalenda B ward.

 

The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS} Board’s Chair Grace Thuku says Kisumu is among the twelve counties in the Country where the project is being launched to help residents get free legal services on various matters affecting them in the society.

 

Thuku says the Mobile Legal services is targeting to reach more vulnerable and marginalized people across the republic.

 

She says one of the mandates of the National Legal Aid Service is to establish a nationwide legal service programs that is credible, accessible, sustainable, affordable and accountable to the public.

 

“We are mandated to educate the public and make them aware of the legal issues that affects them,” she says.

 

 

Program for Legal Aid Delivery in Kenya (PLEAD) European Union (EU) Representative Chimwemwe Mangeni says the program is a five year one and will end in the year 2024.

 

He says it all about capacity building to the local society on legal issues.

 

 

He adds that the initiative targets to offer free legal services to indigents, vulnerable and marginalized groups.

 

Chief of Town Location Willis Onyona says the turnout from members of the public have been overwhelming indeed in the areas the mobile clinic has visited within the location.

 

He suggests that more time should be allocated for the residents to continue to turn out in large numbers in seeking the services.

 

He adds that the issues in Kisumu range from land disputes, succession, divorce, child neglect, evictions among others.

 

The NLAS is a body corporate at the State Law Office established under the Legal Aid Act 2016 and is mandated to among other things facilitate the provision of legal aid services in a coordinated manner to the indigent, vulnerable and marginalized citizenry.
