More than 1,000
households benefit from County Gvt of Ksm 7M donation due to floods
MORE than 1,000 household in Kisumu county have today benefited from donations from
County Government of Kisumu following flush floods that has been witnessed in
different parts of the county.
Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili says various people
from different parts of Kisumu County have been affected by the heavy rains and
flash floods in the last one week.
Addressing the media in Kisumu during the flagging off of
food and none food materials to the residents who have been affected by the
scenario, Dr Owili said the most affected areas include Kapuothe in Nyalenda B
Ward, Wigwa, Nanga and Dunga area, Parts of North Nyakach ward that include Gem
Rae and Wasare area as well as parts of Nyando Sub County and Kolwa East in
Kisumu East constituency.
Owili says in an effort to meet the immediate food needs by
the families who have lost homes, animals, crops and household items, the
County Government of Kisumu through the department of Disaster Management
committee that comprise of state and none state actors has embarked on a
distribution drive that will last for five days.
Owili says the donation worth an estimated shs 7 million
will benefit more than 1,000 households in the affected parts of Kisumu County.
The Kisumu Deputy Governor has hinted that besides the
donation, there is a free medical care and medication which will be availed to
those rendered vulnerable by the floods caused through heavy rains.
He says the County Government of Kisumu has embarked on
desilting exercises to unclog water ways in the county, adding that this will
go in all the flood prone areas in Kisumu County.
“The County Government of Kisumu intends to create a
comprehensive guidelines for desilting key rivers in the county,” Owili says.
