Victims of Kadem in Migori County get donations from Nyanza lawyers
A group of Lawyers from Nyanza
Region has donated food and other items to victims of floods in Sagama Area within North
Kadem ward in Migori County as a result of excess water from the National
Irrigation Board which is under a rice projects at Lower Kuja Irrigation
scheme.
Led by former President of the East
African Law Society James Aggrey Mwamu, the Lawyers under the banner of
Okil Kamaloka Welfare Association{OKWA} have given donations worth shs50,000 to more
100 people in the ward.
Addressing the residents during the
presentation of the food and other items, Mwamu said the donation is also meant
to cushion the victims due to hardships witnessed as a result of Corona
Pandemic which has affected livelihoods of various people in the
community.
He says the gesture will be extended
to areas such as Siaya, and Homa Bay after the Association has greatly been
touched by plight of the flood victims in those area.
Mwamu says so far the same donation
was given to the residents of Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Ward in Ksm County one week
ago.
The residents near Lower Kuja
Irrigation scheme at the same time wants to compensate them so that they settle
in some new areas because the project has displaced them.
Lawyer Ken Okong'o who comes from
the area have threatened to institute legal proceedings against the Government
while seeking the local community to be compensated.
Okong’os sentiment have been echoed
by Lawyer Mwamu who has said the association will provide lawyers to institute
the case against Government.
Michael Tengo, a resident says some
of them are currently staying in schools, chief camps and churches.
He says the Government should
immediately see a way of compensating them for the loss they have gotten as a
result of flood caused by execess water emanating from the irrigation project
within the area.
The resident are very happy with the
donation from the Okil Kamaloka Welfare Association.
