Ex-Kisumu Councilors
mourn fallen Tanzanian former President
A NUMBER of former councilors who served at the now defunct
Municipal Council of Kisumu have sent their messages of condolences to the
People of the United Republic of Tanzania following the untimely death of its
former President Benjamin William Mkapa.
The Councilors led by former Kisumu Municipality Mayor
Shakeel Shabir who is now the Member of Parliament for Kisumu East said it is
quite unfortunate that the Former President of Tanzania has passed on at a time
he is needed most.
They say the late former President was very instrumental in
pushing for the Kisumu to be elevated to City status which was later realized.
The former Civic leaders remember Mkapa as a very down to
earth leader who listened to everyone who came to visit him.
“His simplicity really amazed us when we met him and held
talks in Tanzania. We will really miss him now that he has gone,” they say.
Former Councilor Mzee Odungi Randa described the late
President as a true statesman.
Benjamin Okang Tolo who served as councilor for
Market/Mlimani ward in Kisumu said Mkapa brought a great friendship in Kisumu
City which made it acquire City Status.
Former Kisumu Mayor and now Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabir
said he led a team of councilors to Mwanza in Tanzania to benchmark on how
Kisumu could become a city.
He says Former President Mkapa was very instrumental and
when he came for Kisumu Centenaries celebrations on December 15, 2001 he
proposed that Kisumu needed to be elevated to a city status.
Shabir urges the County Government of Kisumu to ensure that
heroes Corner is established and Mkapa is honored where even a road is named
after him.
The Late Former Tanzanian President Benjamin William Mkapa,
Yoweri Kaguta Mseveni and the late Kenyan former President Daniel Arap Moi
converged in Kisumu City in 2001 to mark Kisumu city Centenaries celebration
when Kisumu became a Millennium City.
Mkapa became Tanzanian President in the year 1995 taking
over from Ali Hassan Mwinyi who succeeded Tanzanian Founding President Mwalimu
Julius Nyerere.
Mkapa retired in 2005 and was succeeded by Jakaya Mrisho
Kikwete who ruled from 2005 to 2015 after which he retired and the current
President John Pombe Magufuli took over power.
He is going to be buried this Wednesday in Tanzania.
