Journalists donate to colleagues to cushion them against effects of Covid-19

A section of  Journalists across the country have come together for the second time and donated funds which have been used to purchase food items to colleagues who have been really hit hard due to effects of Covid-19 pandemic.

The Journalists under the banner of Jofwambo for Jafwambo {Journalists for a Journalist} managed to contribute about shs 114,000 which has been used to buy food items to their colleagues in five counties.

Addressing the press today in Kisumu while presenting their donations to the journalists, Kisumu Coordinator for Jofwambo for Jafwambo Faith Matete said this is the second phase of the program meant to cushion vulnerable scribes as a result of the effects of the Corona virus pandemic.

Matete says the first phase of the initiative was started in April this year where funds were raised by the journalists themselves so as to help purchase food and other items.

She says the second phase commenced this month and has benefitted a number of vulnerable colleagues in five counties namely Nairobi, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori.

Matete says if there will be need to proceed to phase three of the initiative, it will be considered since a sizeable number of journalists are still vulnerable and need help from colleagues.

Samuel Owida who witnessed the distribution of the donation in Kisumu said the process has been above board and only those who are really vulnerable have benefited.

Treasurer for Jofwambo for Jafwambo initiative Dickson Odhiambo says this has been a good gesture, adding that the phase two has benefited more journalists than phase one because more funds have been mobilized for the exercise.

He says a number of Journalists mostly correspondents working for media houses in various regions are very vulnerable due to the effect of Covid-19 hence the need to offer help to them.

“A number of Journalists have undergone pay cut from the media houses they work for due to the effects of Corona virus hence there is real need to come to their rescue,” he says.

He appeals to partners who can chip in any way to help cushion scribes across the country.

The scribes have thanked their colleagues who have turned up and contributed to the initiative.
