Be consistent on school re-opening date, Kisumu MCA tells Magoha

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has been told to be consistent on the issue of re-opening schools across the country as the public grapple with Covid-19 pandemic.

A Member of the County Assembly of Kisumu has challenged the Education Cabinet Secretary to stand firm and have a specific date of re-opening the schools across the country which were shut down due to the Corona virus pandemic and not to continue confusing school-going children.

Addressing the press at the precincts of the county Assembly of Kisumu, South West Ward Member of County Assembly Erick Agola said the Cabinet Secretary for education should have a structured way of communicating the issue as to when the schools will be re-opened.

Has accused Prof. Magoha of being inconsistent as far as the issue of re-opening of schools is concerned.

“The Cabinet Secretary in charge of Education should have a structured way of communication so that he can pass information to the entire republic in a structured manner,” he says.

The Member of the County Assembly says Prof. Magoha’s move of keeping on changing the school re-opening is even very worrying to pupils in primary schools and students in secondary schools across the country.

“Let us put ourselves in our young children’s shoes who have structured their minds and are now composed that schools will be re-opened in September this year but if this move keeps on changing then it confuses the children further,” Agola adds.

He adds that there were information from the Ministry of Education that schools could have re-opened in June this year but that did not happen as anticipated.

The issues of re-opening schools across the country has been a burning one and a section of some stakeholders have been questioning when reopening will take place and what measures will be taken to ensure that the spread of the pandemic is curbed.

Recently, the education cabinet secretary Prof George Magoha was in Kisumu where he met Principals of TVET Institutions on the way forward before such colleges are reopened.

The biggest issue is the issue of social distancing among students in schools where the Government has seen it as a major challenge.

Magoha during his meeting in Kisumu said the schools should be re-open when the country has reached the peak of the pandemic and stabilizers while coming down for 14 days.

“This is what is going to determine whether we open the institutions of learning or not. There is no country in the world who has dared to open when the pandemic is going up,” Magoha said.
