A GROUP of Lawyers from Nyanza
Region has donated food items to victims of dreaded floods in Kabonyo/Kanyagwal ward in
Kisumu County as a result of back flow of water from Lake Victoria.
Led by former President of the East
African Law Society James Aggrey Mwamu and fellow Lawyers Dick Anyul, Grace
Otieno among others, the Lawyers under the banner of Okil Kamaloka Welfare Association have given donations worth shs 50,000
to more than 200 people in Kabonyo/Kanyagwal.
Addressing the media today during
the presentation of the food items to the people, Mwamu said the donation is
also meant to cushion the victims due to hardships witnessed as a result of
Corona Pandemic which has affected livelihoods of various people in the
community.
“We have just been hearing about
this effects of the back flow of water from Lake Victoria in Kabonyo/Kanyagwal
but today we have come and witnessed it by ourselves and the magnitude of the damage
caused is big as houses have been submerged and roads completely destroyed,”
they say
They say the plight of the Residents
of Kabonyo/Kanyagwal ward has really touched them especially those who have
been replaced by the back flow of water from Lake Victoria which has been as a
result of heavy rainfall witnessed in Kisumu County recently.
“We came up with an idea of helping
our people due to the effects of the Covid-19 as well as the victims of the
floods caused by the back flow of water from the Lake Victoria.
The lawyers ask both the County
Government of Kisumu and the National Government to come up with a master plan
to deal with the current situation.
They suggest that there is need to
come up with something like compensation to the people affected in the area.
“We have never come to this place
but today we are here and have witnessed the real situation and how these
people of Kenya live in a terrible situation. They need help and something
needs to be done,” they further say.
They have appealed to the government
to act urgently and ensure that the people within such areas are helped in any way
possible.
They add that the Association will
extend the assistance to areas such as Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay.
Residents of Kabonyo/Kanyagwal Ward
have been greatly affected by the back flow of water from Lake Victoria and
over 500 families have been displaced and some are currently staying in schools
which have also been submerged in water.
The water back flow has moved to
nearly two kilometers from the Lake Victoria where even the crops have been
swept away.
