Kisumu has 401 bed capacity in its Covid 19 Isolation centers

The County Government of Kisumu has so managed to have over 400 beds in its various isolation centers in preparedness to isolate patients suspected to be suffering from Corona Virus.

Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o says they have since set aside a total of 401beds in various isolation facilities across the sub counties.

Addressing the press at Kisumu County Referral Hospital today when he received emergency medical equipment worth shs 1.3million from the Government of Israeli Government, Nyong’o said about 14 health facilities within the county have a total of 401 beds in their isolation centers.

Nyong’o says these facilities include Kisumu County Referral Hospital with 85, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital  100 beds, Lumumba 130, Kombewa 10, Nyakach 10, Ahero 5, Muhoroni 5, Nyang’oma 5, Gita 5, Nyahera 5, Chulaimbo 5, Nyambarimba 5, Katito 5 and Victoria 26.

Nyong’o says in Kisumu County, they are not just looking at meeting the bed capacity but also incorporating a multi-faceted approach that includes infrastructure development and requisite human resource to respond to the situation especially at the prevention level.

“To this end, we have put in place a robust border surveillance that includes screening of those coming into the county through our nine border points and collecting their data through a digital system that will easen contact tracing should the need arise,” he says

Nyong’o risk communication continues to be a key strategy towards the containment of the spread of this virus.

“We have embarked on elaborate outreach and sensitization programs through which we are able to inform the public on what they need to look out for and do in order to reduce, minimise and contain the spread of the virus,” Nyong’o adds.

He says they have achieved this through various means including setting up Kisumu County Covid–19 Emergency Response Call Centre here in Kisumu, the only one set up and managed by a devolved unit to complement the services offered by the National Call Centre in Nairobi.

He says the  Call Centre has been crucial in gathering Covid–19 related information and helpful in handling distress calls of various natures including floods, adding that i has greatly improved the response levels as citizens raise alarms and report suspected cases which are then followed up immediately.

“The fight against COVID-19 is our collective responsibility. Let’s all do what we can to stop the spread of this pandemic, it starts with me and you. Let us be our brothers’ keepers by doing that which is required of us. Let’s adhere to all protocols as stipulated by the Ministry of Health to help save the lives of our loved ones,” Nyong’o further says.

Nyong’o says the number of COVID-19 cases are on the rise across the Country and all counties are racing against time to improve on their state of preparedness.

In Kisumu County, Nyong’o says it has had a total of 60 positive cases out of total 1934 tests carried out.

“Out of the 60 cases, we have recorded 24 recoveries and 3 mortalities. 17 of the active cases are in our public isolation centers with 1 (one) case at a private facility. In line with the protocols outlined for home-based care, we have 11 patients under home-based care,” he adds.

He adds that the numbers are expected to rise even more looking at the trends witnessed across the world and the country.

“In response to this, we plan to carry out Stratified Random Testing to scientifically ascertain our levels of infection. Our epidemiologists are working out sound modelling that will identify the correct numbers for the various vulnerable sectors of the society. We shall then mobilize resources to access the required testing materials and equipment for this exercise,” he further says.
