15 Court of Appeal Judges in Kisumu to hear appeal Backlogs.

A TOTAL of 15 Court of Appeal Judges have camped in Kisumu from today to hear various criminal appeals.

The Judges led by the President of the Court of Appeal Justice William Ouko touched down in Kisumu today to start hearing such appeals for four days till Thursday this week.

Addressing the press in Kisumu today at the new Kisumu Law Court, President of the Court of Appeal Justice William Ouko said they are currently in Kisumu to hear 85 criminal appeal backlogs.
He said the 85 criminal appeals are expected to be cleared by Thursday this week, adding that there are a total of 15 Court of Appeal Judges who are in Kisumu to hear the appeals.

“For those of you who were here in the month of April this year, you can recall that I promised that I will bring 12 Judges of the Court of Appeal to hear the criminal appeal backlogs in the month of July and I have brought a total of 15 judges,” Justice William Ouko said.

He added that the Court of Appeal Judges will be back in Kisumu in November this year as from 3rd to 8th so as to help in hearing more appeals during their second visit.

Justice Ouko said there are about 1600 appeals and applications that are in backlogs, adding that this has been so because the number of Court of Appeals are not many only 19 in number.

He said the other factor that has led to backlogs of appeals is the influx of cases filed since the year 2010 after the promulgation of the constitution, adding that more Kenyans are now coming to court to file cases.

He said after Kisumu, the Court of Appeal Judges will be going on recess which ends on September 15 and the following Monday all the Appeal Judges will be sitting in Nairobi.

“After that we will move to Nyeri and Nakuru and before the year ends we will go to Mombasa and will close the year in Kisumu in November,” Justice Ouko further said.

On Friday this week, the Judges will visit Mama Ngina Children’s Home to donate for the less fortunate members of the society.

They will also visit the Kodiaga Prisons so as to talk to the prisoners there.
