Kisumu MCAs pass a motion wanting Koguta clan in Muhoroni get their land.

MEMBERS of the County Assembly of Kisumu have today passed a motion wanting the members of Nyakach Koguta Clan staying within Muhoroni/Koru Ward to be given their land.

In a motion tabled by Muhoroni/Koru Ward Representative Julius Genga on wanting the Nyakach Koguta Clan staying in Muhoroni area to be handed over back their land known as land reference Number 3977 and 3978, the MCA said this land belongs to the said community and should be given back to them as per a Kenya Gazet notice Number 883 Volume 27 issued on March 1, 2019.

The Notice mandated  the privatization Commission and the Ministry of Land to assist in Planning, surveying and  settling the Nyakach Koguta Community settling in Muhoroni in the Land Reference Number 3977 and 3978.

The said parcels of land are said to be currently under the Muhoroni sugar Company which is now under receivership and should be undergoing the process of privatization as a state-owned sugar factory.

He said the Community started staying there in the year 1900, adding that they have suffered a lot due to historical injustice fighting for their land.

Genga in his motion wants the Department of Land and physical planning at the County Government of Kisumu to implement the directive as per the Gazette Notice.

“Madam Speaker, it is against this background that I am here to move a motion wanting the County Government of Kisumu’s Department of land and Physical planning to move with speed and implement the directive as per the Kenya Gazette Notice,” Genga said.

He said the community may suffer more if the issue is not resolved when the privatization process of the Muhoroni Sugar Company commence hence the need to speed up the process of settling them in their said parcel of land.

During the debate majority of the members of the county Assembly supported the motion and urged the House to step in and help save the situation.

Nominated MCA Aslam Khan while supporting the motion said the issue of settling the Koguta Community living in Muhoroni area should be done once and for all.

“Madam Speaker, this is a very clear issue because if these people settled there more than 100 year ago then this means this land belongs to them,” Khan said.

Nominated MCA Carren Mugah said the motion was a noble one and supported it fully.
South West Kisumu Ward MCA Eric Agola said the directive of the said Kenya Gazette Notice should be implemented as soon as possible.

“The community of Koguta in Muhoroni must be protected together with their property Madam Speaker because they are also Kenyans,” Agola said.

Seth Ochieng Kanga of Market/Mlimani ward fully supported the motion saying it is the constitutional right of the Koguta Community to own and use land just like any other Kenyan.

After the Assembly passed the motion, a  member of the Speaker’s Panel Inviolata Adhiambo who chaired the season directed the Assembly’s Committee on land, Physical planning and  to give a report back to the House within a period of fourteen days.
