Assembly adopts motion wanting cancer screening centers established at Sub-county hospitals

THE County Assembly of Kisumu has today passed a motion wanting cancer screening centers established in all the Seven Sub-Counties hospitals within the County.

In a motion sponsored by Kajulu Ward Member of the County Assembly Roy Samo but moved by Central Kisumu ward Judy Ogada, the members of the County Assembly passed the motion unanimously terming the cancer disease as a big menace in the county that needs to be dealt with at an early stage.

Member of the County Assembly representing Kajulu ward Roy Samo while contributing to the motion said indeed it is sad that most patients suffering from Cancer Disease seek its treatment when at advanced stage hence making many lives to be lost as a result of the disease.

Samo says this is the reason as to why there is need to establish cancer screening centers within the Sub-County Hospitals within the county so that those suffering from the disease can be get early screening and detection.

Samo says if early screening is done and the disease is detected at  earlier enough, the patients can be treated at its early stage.

“Mr. Speaker, the disease known as Cancer is a very dangerous one and can only be treated if early diagnosis is done when it is still in its early stages through screening. This is why I have brought up this motion wanting the establishment of cancer screening centers within all the Sub-County Hospitals across the county so that anybody suspected of suffering from the disease can visit such a center for screening,” Samo said.

He says there is need to train even the Community Health Workers on the issue of detecting signs and symptoms of the cancer disease since they are the ones who are at the ground level dealing with the people directly.

Samo says even the Nurses should be trained on how to detect the disease at an early stage, adding he has a medic who is a good friend of his and can volunteer to offer such trainings.

Market/Mlimani ward Representative Seth Ochieng Kanga who also supported the motion said this will be one of the biggest achievement if implemented.

He said all the Seven Sub-Counties within Kisumu County should have such cancer screening centers including the Kisumu Central Sub-county.

Ochieng says proper preventive structures should be put in place that include the establishment of the cancer screening centers at the Sub-County levels.

He says leaders should be in the forefront and lead on the issue of be screened for cancer diseases so that they know they status in regard to such.
Kisumu County Majority Leader Kenneth Onyango said cancer as a disease has really ravaged a number of families who have lost their loved ones through the scourge.

“I want to believe that the establishment of cancer screening centers at the sub-county level will really be of great help since people will be able to be screened of the disease hence get treatment at an early stage of the disease,” he said.
East Seme Ward Representative Seth Okumu said what is important is the implementation of the proposal, adding that a budget should be set aside for this.
“Let us factor in some money in this budget estimates which we have not passed yet for this issue of cancer screening centers within the Sub-counties level,” Okumu says.
Central Kisumu Ward Representative Judy Ogaga who moved the motion and was called to reply before it was passed thanked the members for debating soberly about it.
