County Govt of Kisumu
has new CEC for Roads
THE County
Government of Kisumu has a new County Executive Committee Member in charge of Roads, Transport and Public works.
Farida
Salim, the New County Executive Committee Member in charge of the docket has been sworn-in today in the
presence of Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o in an exercise that has been
presided over by a judicial Officer.
Salim
becomes the third Kisumu County Executive Committee Member in charge of Roads,
Transport and public works.
The two
others who previously held the docket include Thomas Ondijo who was sacked and
replaced by Dr. Joyce Osogo who has since resigned to pursue political
interests in Homa Bay County where she has declared her interest in the County’s
women representative seat.
Addressing the gathering during the
Swearing-in ceremony held near Kisumu Governor’s office today, Kisumu Governor
Prof Anyang Nyong’o said he has settled on Ms. Salim to manage
this very important and sensitive department after careful consultations and
scrutiny of her background and leadership qualities, adding that she fits the
bill.
“We presented her to the County
Assembly and the MCAs gave her a clean bill of health. We thank the Assembly
for the wise decision. Ms. Salim is joining the government to replace the
former CECM Joyce Osogo who resigned to join politics. She is not new to the Public sector, having
been a member of the Kisumu City Board,” Nyong’o says
Governor Nyong’o says her
appointment is also in keeping with the county Government’s Gender policy of
inclucivity, adding that women must also play an important role in his
government.
“I wish to take this opportunity
to congratulate Ms. Salim but caution her that there will be no time for a honeymoon. Work starts now because a full tray awaits
you in the office,” Nyong’o adds.
Nyong’o says her appointment comes at a time the County Government is implementing several infrastructure projects and expect her to provide policy guidelines and good leadership to help them deliver on the promises they made on roads, transport, and Public works.
“My government has done a great
job in the opening and maintenance of new roads but I expect you to put more
effort, especially into the supervision of the Road Maintenance teams, which is
a new and unique phenomenon in the department. You shall also help us implement
the machine-based roads construction program which is already very successful,”
Nyong’o further says.
Governor Nyong’o has
revealed that the county Government of Kisumu has employed 280
Road maintenance workers, 35 Supervisors, and 5 technical supervisors to
oversee the maintenance of the roads in the
35 wards within the county.
He says the team
will maintain and open up at least 3km of road network in every village this
financial year.
“As a measure of roads sustainability, we have
adapted the use of new technology
in road maintenance, “the Clayerete Technology”. Claycrete offers new technology in road maintenance that can
sustain roads conditions between 5 to 10 years.” He adds
He further says the county government of Kisumu
has also made a strategic decision to improve its major link roads to bitumen
standards.
“In the next few days, we shall be launching
the upgrading of Namba Kapiyo-Bodi Asat-Bao road to Bitumen standards,” he further
says.
On her part, the new County Executive Member
in charge of Roads, Transport and Public Works Farida Salim has pledged to work
with all the stakeholders to deliver the service the citizens of Kisumu County
needs from the departments she now heads.
