Kenyans told to elect
leaders who have issues of climate change at heart
KENYANS have been told to elect political leaders in the
forthcoming General Election in August who can address the issues of climate
change from lower to the highest level.
By doing this, it will be very easy for the issues of
climate change that has been there to be tackled well.
Transform Empowerment for Action Initiative{TEAM} which is
an Non-Governmental Organization says Kenyans now have a chance in exercising
their democratic rights and elect leaders of their choice come August 9 General
Election hence have to make a decision on electing leaders who understand and
can address the issue of climate change.
The organization says only people who are championing for the
issues of adaptation and mitigation measures should be elected as leaders,
adding that let Kenyans not be swayed by political parties’ friends but the
executive authority which is vested on them by the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
“Elect leaders whom you will never regret and only those who
are guided by the principles of Article 10 of the constitution on National
Values and Principles,” Team says.
Addressing members of the community from various wards in
Nyando constituency during the locally led climate actions{Policy dialogues},
Transform Empowerment for Action Initiative{Team} Director George Collins Owuor
said the organization have begun conversation within the various areas in Kenya
on adaptation and mitigation regarding the issues of climate change.
Owuor says such a conversation will help in making the
various stakeholders right from the grass root level to begin looking at the
issue of climate change with different lenses and do something about it
especially on planting trees thus help in reduction of emission of greenhouse
gases.
The conversations are supported by the Transform Empowerment
for Action Initiative {Team} and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.
He says it is very key to the people in various counties
Kisumu County included to have a County Integrated Development Plan {CIDP} that
talks about the implementation of Climate change policies.
The Team Director has further challenged the County
Government of Kisumu under Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o to put even a two
percent budget to support adaptation and mitigation measures.
Owuor says implementation of the policies regarding the
issues of climate change have never been successful because of lack of
goodwill.
Climate Change officer at the County Government of Kisumu
Beatrice Okello says there are actions plan on the issues of climate change in
Kisumu County.
She says already there is a climate information system where
an automatic weather station is situated at Ayweyo area in Kisumu County and
provides information on weather.
Okello adds that the Directorate of Climate change has also
established a Bio Energy Center within Masogo/Nyang’oma ward which will help in
the production of biogas that is being used as a fuel for cooking purposes.
She says this is aimed at ensuring that the local community
keeps only sizeable livestock that help in getting manure to be used in the Bio
center for the production of the Bio gas.
The Climate Change officer further says there has also been
an established Bio technology Center at Kolenyo area in Seme which helps as a
capacity building center where people are sensitized on tree planting as well
as planting early maturity seeds.
“As a Directorate, we also carry out knowledge management
where the public are sensitized on what should be done to reduce greenhouse
gases emissions to the atmosphere,” she says.
Samuel Omondi Okello, a tree farmer from Kadibo says there
is need for the people to engage in planting of more trees in their farms as
this will help addressing the issue of climate change.
