Union official calls
on Govt to declare fuel shortage a national disaster
A UNION Official has called on the National Government to
immediately declare the issue of the fuel shortage across the country a national
disaster.
The Kenya Union of Sugarcane plantation and Allied Workers
General Secretary Francis Wangara says President Kenyatta should declare the
issue of fuel shortage countrywide a national crisis.
Addressing the press in Kisumu, Wangara said some
substantial amount of money from the exchequer should be set aside to address
the matter at hand urgently.
Wangara says Millions of workers are facing a possible
collapse of the sugar and many other sectors across the country.
He says the Government should ensure that the fuel is
available across the country and Kenyans should have access to it at all times.
He says most Kenyans now pay more for bus fare simply
because of the prices of the fuel that has been hiked for no apparent reason.
“Kenyans are really suffering by paying a lot of money as
bus fare after the fuel prices have been hiked due to fuel shortage in the
country. We called upon the Government to consider declaring this a national
disaster in the country,” he says.
Wangara says the issue of the fuel shortage should never be
politicized at all especially at this time the country is facing the
electioneering period.
He says the long queues witnessed in many fuel stations
across the country is a sure sign that Kenyans are really suffering as a result
of the fuel shortage.
Wangara’s sentiments comes barely a few days after a section
of taxi operators of Kisumu claimed that issue of fuel crisis across the
country have been brought up after some fuel operators decided to hoard the
fuel so as to hike the price of the commodity.
They have appealed to the National Government to intervene
and save Kenyans from the agony of the fuel shortage.
