Nearly 100 cows have died mysteriously within two areas of Nyakach
within Kisumu County.
The cause of the animals’ death is still unknown as
residents of two the areas of Rang’ul and Asawo reeling in shock following the incident.
Addressing the residents when a team of Veterinary doctors
visited the area to assess the situation, Kisumu County Director of Veterinary
services Dr. Evance Odhiambo said on one village lost more than 50 cows and the
other about 47 by mid-morning yesterday.
He says they have requested for the services of an excavator
from the County Government of Kisumu so as to help in burying the carcasses,
adding that samples have been taken to the laboratory for examinations so as to
ascertain the cause of death.
The County Veterinary officer has urged the public to be
aware of what kind of meat they are feasting on, adding that the department of
Public health is on high alert to ensure that all slaughtered animals are
properly inspected and are fit for human consumption.
“We have to move around to know the sources of the meat
being supplied because from a slaughter house, one must have documents for
transporting the inspected meat from such a place to their destinations that
include certificate of transport,” Dr. Odhiambo says
He says there is a stamp for all the inspected meat before
moving them to various destinations, adding the public should not eat meat from
such cows that have died mysteriously.
Nyakach constituency Manager Sylvan Ocholla urged the
department of veterinary to do thorough investigations into the matter.
“We will liaise with the relevant departments to ensure that
the report after investigations is given early enough so that necessary action
is taken,” Ochola says.
Chief of Rang’ul Location George Odoyo Ong’ayo appealed to
both the National and county Governments to help in proper disposal of the carcasses,
adding that should be done to avoid the
meat getting into the market where the public can purchase for consumption.
A resident of the area Aluoch Malachi and Michael Owino who
is some of the people who have lost their cows have appealed to the county
Government of Kisumu to intervene and ensure that the remaining livestock are
not affected by the same incident.
The incident occurred again in four years after another
similar one occurred within the area in 2018 where the residents lost cows
following their deaths mysteriously.
