THE County Government of Kisumu has given six sports gears to six more wards within the county.

Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o says a total of 19 wards have now benefited from the sports gears and equipment from the County Government of Kisumu.

Nyong’o says the six wards that have benefitted include Ombeyi, Onjiko/Awasi, East Kano/Wawidhi,Manyatta B, Kolwa Central and West Nyakach wards.

Nyong’o says the other nine wards that have benefitted in the distribution include Nyalenda B, Central Nyakach, Kolwa East, Market/ Milimani, Kabonyo Kanyagwal, North Kisumu, Kajulu, Ahero and East Seme.

Other wards that benefited earlier included North West Kisumu, Railways, Ahero and South West Kisumu.

Addressing the press today during the presentation of the sports gears to the six wards, Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o said an estimated shs 8.9 million were used to procure sports equipment during the financial year 2020/2021 and were issued to eight wards.

He says in the just concluded financial year, the number of the recipient wards was increased to 19 with an allocation of shs 23,850,000.

Nyong’o says the purpose of sportswear which includes uniforms and equipment is to enhance performance during training and competition.

“As a county, we have been leading by example by participating in various sporting activities at the national level. Allow me to salute all our sportsmen and women who have made this county stand out as a home of heroes and heroines.  We will continue to support you,” Nyong’o says.

Recently, Nyong’o says they participated in the inter-county sports competition known as Kicosca that was held in Embu late last year, adding that the sportsmen and women collected a bountiful of trophies, justifying our decision to send them there.

“Our county staff team emerged overall in position two (2) after Nairobi county.  They brought home 14 trophies, and a number of our players were selected to join the Kenyan team for the EALASCA games in Eldoret  from 7th to 13th March 2022. Currently, Kisumu County has 23 active sports federations with several teams participating at various levels (from county leagues, through national super leagues to premier leagues). Our one and only Kisumu All-Stars aka Otenga are doing well in the national Super league,” he adds.

He further adds that People with Disability sports teams have also been blazing the trail, adding that they are the true proof that Disability is not an inability.

“During the October 2021 inter-county Para-Volley championships held in Nakuru County, our MEN team emerged in overall position two while the LADIES  team was overall position three and were both awarded trophies for the same. This weekend our County Men Para volley team which is a beneficiary of this project represented the County at the Inter-County Games in Trans-nzoia where they emerged the overall winners,” Nyong’o further says.

Governor Nyong’o adds that the Inter-County Water Company Games will be held in Kisumu City from 19th April to 3rd May 2022.

“The presence of the Games will bring an added advantage of boosting our businesses both small and large. It also allows us to market and provides a chance for our guests to sample our tourism destinations and attractions. To sustain this tempo, my government will continue to support sports through the provision of needed facilities and equipment,” Nyong’o says.
