Police will remain neutral during electioneering period.

POLICE within Nyanza region will remain neutral during the entire electioneering period, the Regional Police Coordinator Willy Lugusa has said.

Lugusa says all the police officers serving within the region are expected to observe impartiality before,during and after the polls, adding that police will show their neutrality during the electioneering period.

Speaking during a forum organized under the theme of Kenya Election Violence Prevention and Response{KEVP} on Thursday in Kisumu for the youth, the regional Police boss said one of the duties of the police officers is to maintain law and order and can only do this if they are neutral during this electioneering period.

He says there is need by the youth to maintain peace during this period when the country is facing General Elections slated for August this year.

Lugusa says they are working together with the various stakeholders across the board to ensure there is peace at this moment of electioneering period.

Lugusa who met various youth from Kondele, Obunga, Manyatta, Nyalenda among other areas urges them not to be misused by any politician to cause chaos during this period.

“I want to urge the youth not to allow themselves to be misused by any politician to cause chaos as this will be of no benefit at all,” Lugusa says.

He assures the public in Nyanza region that the police are very much prepared for the political parties’ nomination process as well as the General Election by ensuring that peace is maintained during the electioneering period.

He appreciates the public for giving information to the police which has really help in fighting crime.

“Nowadays the security situation in Kisumu and parts of Nyanza is manageable because we have gotten credible information from the public which has led to the arrest of suspected criminals and the level of insecurity has gone down,” he adds.

He says as a service they are ready to serve the public,adding that any person who will take part in acts of election violence will be dealt with in accordance to the law.

Elly  Opondo from the Champions for peace says there is need for a cordial relationship between the police and the public.

He adds that there is need by the various political parties to conduct free, fair and transparent nomination process so as to avert chaos.

He also appeals to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission {IEBC} to also conduct a transparent, free, fair and credible General Elections slated for August this year.
