Disaster Management Committee formation on offing.
Kisumu County Disaster
Management Committee will soon be formed, Kisumu County Commissioner Maalim
Mohamed has said.
Maalim says this committee is
very crucial in coordinating and managing any form of disaster that may arise
within the county.
Speaking during a forum held
at Joventure Hotel in Kisumu on Disaster Management, Maalim said they would
liaise with the County Government of Kisumu to ensure this committee is formed.
He says the Committee will be
co-chaired by the Kisumu County Commissioner and Kisumu County Governor Jack
Ranguma.
Maalim says there are a
number of stakeholders who are also involved in this.
He says some of the stakeholders
include the Kisumu County Security and Intelligence Committee, the County
Government of Kisumu, Kenya Airport Authority, Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya
Pipeline among others.
Maalim says the Committee
will be able to coordinate and manage any form of disaster while trying to
offer quick response.
“We are going to consult with
the Governor so as to constitute the Kisumu County Disaster Management
Committee for this our region,” he says.
He adds that the committee
once constituted will be able to effectively coordinate the disaster related
issues.
Kisumu International Airport
Manager Joseph Okumu says they take seriously the issues of emergency.
He says they have been
conducing various exercises including emergency drilling exercise that has been
very successful.
He says the Disaster
Management Committee should be put in place so as to help in coordinating the
issues of disaster within the region.
Meanwhile, nearly 100
homesteads in Nyando Sub-County have been sub-merged in water following the
heavy rains witnessed in the area.
Kisumu County Commissioner
Maalim Mohamed says the Homes affected are within Kakola Location.
He has asked the Chiefs and
their Assistants so as to tell people to move to higher grounds.
