Kisumu Girls High School closed indefinitely after students’ riot.

KISUMU Girls High School in Kisumu City has been closed indefinitely following riots by the students last night.

The decision to close down the school was reached by the Kisumu County Director of Education Sabina Aroni.

Speaking to the press at the institution today, Aroni said they have decided to close down the school indefinitely since the students became rowdy and could not be controlled hence sending them away home indefinitely.

Aroni who immediately got engaged in a meeting with the school’s Board of Management said investigation towards the cause of the unrest by the students leading to closure of the institution.

“We have launched investigations so as to know what exactly transpired that led to the unrest by the students,” she says.

A section  of students who spoke to the press on condition  of anonymity have accused the principal Marget Mechumo Mamai of high handedness , adding that she is running the institution like a personal property.

They claim that the Principal has scrapped the entertainment part which they used to have every Saturday evening by forcing the students to instead study.

“Every Saturday evening is entertainment in our school but our new principal came in here, she scrapped it without any reason,” they say.

They also claim that the Principal has really interfered with the Freedom of worship where she has allegedly refused that members of a particular religious group do not conduct their prayers within the school.

“Freedom of Worship is a constitutional right and must be respected by all including those heading learning institutions,” they say.

Former Nominated MCAs Faridah Salim who is also a parent in the school says no one should be denied freedom of worship whether in school or at home.

She says the students’ grievances are very genuine hence needs to be addressed, adding that she does not support the students in destroying the school’s property during the rampage.

During the rampage, the students caused destruction to property worth unknown value.
