Water Coverage in Kisumu is 72%, Surpasses National Coverage at 52%.

THE Water coverage in Kisumu County is now at 72 percent as compared to the national coverage which stands at 52 percent.

Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma says the population of service is higher in the low income areas which stands at 60 percent.

Speaking during the official commissioning of two community water projects for Manyatta and Kachok Communities, Ranguma said the increase in water coverage within Kisumu County has been as a result of various measures the County Government of Kisumu and some partners have put in place to ensure availability of water to the residents.

Ranguma says under the able management of Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company{KIWASCO} Managing Director Eng. David Onyango and its Board Chairman Israel Agina, Kisumu is not only a water secure city but also has high quality water supply.

The Governor says however, bringing Water to people’s home within the county has been a very expensive affair especially as one goes deeper into the expansive Kisumu County but this has been made possible by collaboration between KWASCO and other donor and partners.

“On that note, I would like to thank Water Service Trust Fund and Vitens Evides International {VEI} for having embarked on a joint venture to contribute towards increasing water supply in the low income areas of Kisumu,” Ranguma says.

The residents of the areas where the community water has been commissioned will now get water cheaply as a 20 litter jerrican of water will cost one shillings.
The Kisumu Water and Sewerage Company{KIWASCO} Managing Director Eng. David Onyango says the company in collaboration with Water Service Trust Fund and Vitens Evides International{VEI} have supported the community water projects for the urban poor in Kisumu.

Onyango says the project known as Performance Enhancement for Water Utilities in Kenya {PEWAK} supported by VEI will cost about shs 19million.

“This entails installing 45 number of prepaid meters that are expected to serve over 40 households hence 10,800 beneficiaries. The same project will also connect 200 households with stand water pipes hence benefiting 1200 residents of Kachok in Kisumu,” Onyango says.

He says Water Service Trust Fund{WSTF} has also given a grant of shs 11 million towards the project.

He adds that the project  has also constructed 3 number of water kiosks that are currently being run by the local community within Manyatta.

He says the two community water projects commissioned so far aims at upgrading water and sanitation in the low income areas identified by the Water Services Regulatory Board{WASREB} as well as increasing access to water and Sanitation services.

“This will also help in providing opportunities for the local community groups to manage the water projects in order to empower themselves economically thus also improving their livelihoods,” the Kiwasco Managing Director adds.
