Digital Literacy Program in Kisumu on the right path,Says Director.
THE ongoing Digital Literacy Program
in Kisumu County is on the right path, a Senior Information and Communication
Technology has said.
Information Communication Technology
(ICT) Authority Director Jerome Ochieng says the digital literacy program
gadgets distribution in schools within Kisumu County is at 80%.
Ochieng says so far over 480 public
primary schools have been covered by the program within Kisumu county.
He says a total of 26,775 devices
have been given to class one pupils in the schools to support their learning.
Speaking at Pedo primary school in
Nyakach Sub County while giving the devices, Ochieng says the devices have
changed learning in schools adding that he was impressed with the progress.
Ochieng says the government has
enough of the gadgets for distribution across the different parts of the
country.
He adds that the department is now
going around schools and monitor the use of the devices where they have been
distributed.
“The assembling of these gadgets is
being done here locally by our own universities like Jomo Kenyatta and Moi
University so they are easily available.
He says he was optimistic that in
one week’s time they will have covered 100% distributed in all the public
schools targeted to receive the devices in Kisumu County.
He says they will enhance monitoring
in schools with the devices already to ensure that the devices are put in their
right usage.
Kisumu County Jubilee Secretary
General Steve Biko who was present at the event says the Jubilee government is
committed to investing and improving education in the country.
“This is a government that has shown
commitment in making education across the country equitable, quality and accessible
to all pupils,” Biko says.
Pauline Otieno, a Class one
pupil at Pedo primary school says the devices have changed learning in
the school adding that the pupils are now addicted to their lessons as opposed
to before.
“It’s surprising that nowadays these
children don’t even want to go home, they want to learn all throughout the
day,” She says.
The school’s patron Mr Erick Okeyo
says the initiative was great but urged the government to consider adding more
devices.
Okeyo has thanked the Government for
the program which he has termed a good one for the pupils.
