PARENTS having children with disabilities have been urged
not to be hiding them at home without taking them to school.
Kisumu Central Sub-County Director of Education Charles Ang’iela
says parent doing such a thing to their children with disabilities are doing a
great disservice to them.
Speaking at Lutheran Church Special School during its
Friends day occasion on Friday, the Sub-County Director of Education said
parents should help in giving hopes to their children with disabilities by
ensuring that they do not hide them at home
He says it is quite unfortunate that it has appeared in a
section of the media across the country that some parents have been hiding their
children with disabilities in some parts of the country.
The Officer has applauded parents who have taken the
initiative of not hiding their children with disabilities and has taken them to
school for some form of learning.
“I want to sincerely thank fellow parents who have gone a
step further by ensuring that their children with disabilities are not hidden
and taken school. This is a plus for such parents because they have shown that
their children are also like others who needs to be well taken care of and
taken to school,” the officer says.
He has urged parents and teachers to be very more
comfortable with children with various disabilities.
Ang’iela also urged various special schools within the
sub-County to consider making them more learners and children’s friendly so as
to make the children with disabilities love the institutions.
“It would have been very prudent if the special schools are
made more learner and children’s friendly as this will surely make the children
with disabilities to love the institutions,” he adds.
Lutheran Church Special School Head Teacher Richard Omondi
also echoes the same sentiments and has urged the parents to not hide their
children with disabilities.
He says the school is very much in need of such children
hence no need for parents to continue hiding them if at all there are still
some parents doing so.
Omondi says one of the challenges that they have as a
special school is the issue of inadequate classrooms.
He has thanked the Government profusely for availing the some
funds for the school towards the construction of two new classrooms so as to be
able to address the shortage of the classrooms within the institution.
