FAO Embarks on tree planting exercise in Kisumu Schools to make environment green

FAO Embarks on tree planting exercise in Kisumu Schools to make environment green

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FA0) in collaboration with the County Government of Kisumu have embarked a tree planting exercise in a number of schools within Kisumu County.

During the event held at Kisumu Union Primary school today, Food and Agriculture Organization Kenya Country Representative Ambassador. Carla Mucavi said the move is aimed at sensitizing school going children on issues of environmental conservation

“Under the Green Cities Initiative supported by FAO, the tree planting exercise has been organized with an aim of raising awareness on the importance of sustainable development in environmental conservation with the overall goal of sustainable food systems,” she says.

She says the program envisions improved environmental conservation and enhanced knowledge on the importance of environmental conservation in schools and public spaces through the tree planting exercises for 4k club students, while raising awareness on the importance of sustainable practices for cities and urban spaces across generations.

Mucavi says using the 4K clubs’ approach, the program which will enable children to connect with nature, plant trees and nurture them.

 She says the initiative targets to plant a total of 1,500 seedlings comprising fruit trees, shade trees and ornamental trees in four schools.

The schools include Usoma, Rabuor, Tido and Union Primary School as well as two streets within the city.

County Executive Committee member in charge of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries at the County Government of Kisumu Gilchrist Okuom said the County Government of Kisumu under Prof Anyang Nyong’o is fully supporting the initiative in collaboration with Food and Agricultural Organization.

He says planting of trees is one of the key pillars of the 4K Club in schools across the country.

“We want children to grow while knowing the importance of conserving the environment,” he says

He adds that while planting of trees will be done in schools, greening of Kisumu City and satellite towns will also be done through their partnership with FAO under the Green Cities Initiative.

“We want cities that are green and not only brick and mortar in our city and towns,” Okuom adds.

He says the County Government of Kisumu have repossessed a number public parks in Kisumu County with an aim of promoting greening initiative, adding that part of what they are doing is to plant fruit trees.

 

The 4K clubs’ initiative in schools was launched and rebranded by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

This initiative which is in line with the Big 4 Agenda, particularly regarding food and nutrition security, seeks to create awareness and inculcate a positive mindset among students towards agriculture.
