delegates for Africities Summit in May
Kisumu
Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o is in Morocco and has attended the General
Assembly of Presidents of Local Governments of the Kingdom of Morocco to
mobilize delegates for the upcoming Africities Summit to be held in Kisumu this
May 17 to 21.
The
general Assembly was held at the Kenzi Rose Garden Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco.
This
is the first General Assembly of the presidents since the last general
elections held last year.
The
Assembly is the congregation of all elected leaders at the decentralized units
both at the regional presidencies and the cities.
Addressing
the Assembly, the governor thanked the leadership of the Assembly for granting
him and the Kenyan delegation to an opportunity to address them and appraise
them of the progress made in Africities planning process.
He
notes that the Assembly is similar in many ways to the Council of Governors
where he sits the Chairman of the Health Committee.
He extoled the
role played by UCLGA in facilitating the growth of strong local governments by
innovating instruments that will give African local governments’ access to
international financial institutions for financing development agenda such as
the African Territorial Agency.
He encouraged the regional governments of the
Kingdom of Morocco to sign up and be members of this innovative special purpose
vehicle.
He assured the
assembly that Kisumu and the Government of Kenya are Kenya to deliver a
memorable event that will open the gates to celebration of the emergence of
intermediary cities on the global map and their role in the implementation of
the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union agenda of realization
of the Africa we want.
In his address,
the outgoing President of the Assembly Mr. Khaled Badra praised the commitment
of the Governor, the leadership of the County Government of Kisumu and Kenya in
general in ensuring that the first intermediary city to host this event lifts
the name of decentralized governments of Africa.
“This event is
not just about Kisumu, but the role and capacity of the Local governments of
Africa in showing the world that they have come of age to play their role in
creating a better Africa for all”, says Badra.
The Governor was
accompanied by the PS Ministry of Devolution, Hon. Julius Korir and officers
from the Ministry and the County Government of Kisumu.
Morocco is subdivided into multiple levels of
government, all directly under the Ministry of the Interior.
At the top are 16 regions governed by regional
presidents and their deputies, which are further divided into several dozen
provinces and urban prefectures, each ruled by a governor appointed by the
king.
The
African Cities{Africities} is a pan-African conference held every three years
since 1998 when the first meeting was held in Abidjan, Cote d’ voire.
It is
being convened by the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa’s {UCLG-A}.
With
its headquarters at Rabat in Morocco, the Africities brings together the
leadership of Cities {Mayors}, Sub-National and Local Governments with the aim
of improving living standards of their citizens.
The
hosting of the Africities Summit rotates between five African Sub-Regional
Blocks.
This
Ninth Edition of the Africities Summit will be held in Kisumu as an
intermediary city from May 17 to 21 this year.
The
Eight Edition of the summit was held in Marrakech in Morocco in 2018.
In
2006, Kenya hosted the Africities Summit for the first time in Nairobi and this
year in May, it will host it for the second time in Kisumu which is not its
Capital City but an intermediary City after Kenya won the bid to host it in the
year 2021 November.
The effects
of Corona virus pandemic made it pushed to May this year.
