Governor Nyong'o appreciates Agreement as Kisumu is ready to host Africities summit
Kisumu Governor has appreciated Africa
Territorial Agency Agreement being spearheaded by the United Cities and Local Governments
{UCLG} in Africa as the ninth edition of the Africities summit that is to be held
in Kisumu City in May this year nears.
Governor Nyong’o says this is one of
the measures that the UCLG in Africa is implementing to ensure that Africa’s local
governments stand on their feet economically.
Addressing a meeting at the UCLGA East
African Regional Caucus held in Nairobi today in the framework of the preparation of the 9th edition
of the Africities Summit and the Ordinary General Assembly of UCLG Africa to be held in Kisumu City in May this year, Kisumu
Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o said through such agreement, there is a vehicle that will
give UCLG-Africa direct access to international financial markets to help finance
critical development agenda and the much needed devolved services such as
health, water and agriculture.
“May I therefore take this opportunity to
encourage us all to follow in the footsteps of local and regional governments
who have signed up to this agreement like Kisumu County to come forth and begin
the journey to economic independence,” the Kisumu Governor says.
Nyong’o
says the spirit of togetherness in UCLG- Africa can be inspired by the lesson learnt
during the Corona Virus pandemic.
“The
sad lessons where neighbours rushed to close their borders and focussed on the
self. Where major economies gobbled up all the response tools available such as
vaccines as we were left to whittle away,” Nyong’o says.
He
says the upcoming 9th edition of the Africities Summit is not only for Kisumu
or Kenya but for the whole region.
"Let us all arise as a family to lay out the
red carpet to receive our guests in May. We can only
do this if we as a region, register more delegates for the summit than any other region or delegations,” he adds.
Governor
Nyong’o has confirmed that Kisumu and indeed Kenya will make them proud with
the sound preparations put in place for the Summit in May this year.
“As
a government, we remain eternally grateful to UCLG-Africa and its entire
membership, for the honour and confidence bestowed in Kisumu City to be the
very first intermediary city to host this premier event. I am confident that
the success of this summit will open the door to other intermediary cities in
future to host this event. We look forward to congregating in another secondary
city for the 10th Summit,” he further says.
Nyong’o
says as the delegates congregate in Kisumu in May this year for the Africities
Summit, people must always remember that the solutions to Africa's challenges
depend on their joint efforts.
The
African Cities{Africities} is a pan-African conference held every three years
since 1998 when the first meeting was held in Abidjan, Cote d’ voire.
It is
being convened by the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa’s {UCLG-A}.
With
its headquarters at Rabat in Morocco, the Africities brings together the
leadership of Cities {Mayors}, Sub-National and Local Governments with the aim
of improving living standards of their citizens.
The
hosting of the Africities Summit rotates between five African Sub-Regional
Blocks.
This
Ninth Edition of the Africities Summit will be held in Kisumu as an
intermediary city from May 17 to 21 this year.
The
Eight Edition of the summit was held in Marrakech in Morocco in 2018.
In 2006, Kenya hosted the Africities Summit for the first time in Nairobi and this year in May, it will host it for the second time in Kisumu which is not its Capital City but an intermediary City after Kenya won the bid to host it in the year 2021 November.
The effects of Corona virus pandemic made it pushed to May this year.
