Govt to recruit 5,000
new police officers as from next week, says NPSC
The National Government through the National Police Service
Commission is set to recruit 5,000 new police officers across the country as
from next week.
The National Police Service Commission Vice Chairman Dr. Alice
Otwala says as from next week, the exercise which has been delegated from the
commission as the employer to the office of the Inspector General of Police
will kick off.
Addressing the press in Kisumu today after sensitization
program for the youth on the career of the police officers, Dr Otwala said the
office of the Inspector General of Police will be conducting the recruitment
exercise throughout the country.
Dr. Otwala says the National Police Service Commission is
visiting the 47 counties across the country where it is engaging the youth and
sensitizing them on the requirement for the job and career as a police officer.
Dr. Otwala observes that in the past there was a lot of
interference in the process of recruitment.
“There were cartels that were misleading the youth in the
process of recruiting them to be police officers and this was through
corruption where some cartels were formed to interfere with such a process as
they mislead the youth on the opportunities provided by the government,” she
says.
She says the NPSC are also engaging the youths to know their
rights and what they need to look for in preparations for the recruitment
exercise.
“We do hope that all the youth interested in the forthcoming
police recruitment are empowered through this sensitization and that they will
come out in large numbers for the recruitment exercise as from next week so as
to compete and the best get the opportunities,” she adds.
She appeals to those who have tried the recruitment exercise
before to continue trying this time round because the opportunity is there.
Dr. Otwala adds that the Commission is very much confident
that they youth that will go through the process will be the best police
officers the country will have because police is where dignity and
professionalism is needed most.
“The public uses taxes to train the police officers at a
very high cost of sh 1million when they go through Kiganjo Police Training
College. Let them make the best choice during the recruitment exercise so that
we get the best,” she further says.
She further urges the public to also participate in the
process since it will be done openly where everyone will see what is happening
because it will help in forestalling the incidences of corruption where that
can be.
She hopes the exercise will be a corruption free one across
the country.
