Vocational Training centers in Kisumu
has increased from 20 to 26, Governor says
The number of Vocational training Centers in
Kisumu has increased from 20 to 26 from the year 2018 to date, Kisumu Governor
has said.
Governor
Nyong’o says he expect the establishment of 3 more, one at Lela in Kobura, Waware
in Masogo/Nyang’oma, and Path Othany in East Seme in the Coming Year.
Addressing
the County Vocational and Education Training Graduation Ceremony held at Kisumu
Rotary Vocational Training Center, Governor Nyong’o said they are striving to
establish at least one VTC per Ward to bring the training closer to residents.
Nyong’o
says the County Government has spent approximately 206 Million in capitation
grants, adding that they are committed to increasing the allocation.
“We
urge the youth to enroll in Vocational training Centers near them since the
County guarantees partial payment of applicable fees of KSh. 15, 000,” Governor
Nyong’o says.
Nyong’o
says that County Government of Kisumu appreciates the MOE’s program on
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where most Jua Kali Artisans would have their skills certified to enable them
to access government procurement opportunities.
“On
the Policy on management of VTCs, my officers are working on the domestication of
Vocational, Education, and Training (VET) policy to address Kisumu specific
issues,” he adds.
Once
this is done, Nyong’o says they expect a paradigm shift in operations in the
sector, adding that Key among them will be the transformation of Centers into
production units for self-sustainability.
Nyong’o
adds that County Government has piloted the Establishment of baby care Centres
in 5 VTCs to enable teen mother’s access quality training especially. This is
an affirmative action to ensure babies are taken care of as their teen mothers
learn in class.
Nyong’o
further says that at the Council of Governors, the Education Committee is collaborating with the
Ministry of Education’s Directorate of Technical and Vocational Education and
Training and the Numerical Machining Complex in harmonizing the quality of
equipment and tools used in the County Vocational Training Centers (VTCs).
Should the Senate Bill on County Vocational
Education and Training be enacted into law- and I am certain it will- my Government through the Department of Education will upscale its monitoring role to
ensure relevant and quality training is administered.
Governor Nyong’o at the same time said on a
wider scale, they have provided scholarships and bursary allocations totaling
Ksh 205 million to High school, middle-level Colleges, and University students
in the last financial year.
“For the first time, we also gave scholarships
to 70 students (Two from each ward) who are pursuing various marine courses at the
Marine School recently built in Kisumu. We considered this as important because
of the many job opportunities now existing in the Lake’s Blue Economy,” he
further say.
He says their target remains needy but
bright/competent beneficiaries and all those who will be joining Form 1 and
continuing students. These students are
encouraged to apply through their respective wards.
“To
the graduands, I wish to congratulate you once more for concentrating on your
studies. Now you are out in the field to look for Jobs. I want to assure you
that with the skills you have acquired, getting jobs may not be such a tall
order. I am saying this because Kenya has an acute shortage of people with
technical skills like you,” he says.
Nyong’o
has urged them not to forgets to further their education, adding that nothing
can stop them from graduating with a Ph.D. within the next few years.
“Finally,
but of utmost importance, ladies and Gentlemen, join me in thanking our County
Assembly through the Speaker and the Chair of the Education Committee
for their continued support to our education sector,” Nyong’o further said
