Nine More wards in Kisumu benefit from sports
gears and equipment
A total of
nine wards within Kisumu County have benefitted from sport gears and equipment purchased
by the County Government of Kisumu to help in developing talents.
Kisumu
Governor Prof Peter Anyang Nyong’o says a total of 13 wards have now benefited
from the sports gears and equipment from the County Government of Kisumu.
The nine wards that have benefitted in the distribution include Nyalenda B, Central
Nyakach, Kolwa East, Market/ Milimani, Kabonyo Kanyagwal, North Kisumu, Kajulu,
Ahero and East Seme.
Other wards that benefited earlier included North
West Kisumu, Railways, Ahero and South West Kisumu.
Addressing the press in Kisumu during the handing over the equipment and
the sport gears to various wards Administrations, Nyong’o said an estimated shs
8.9 million were used to procure sports equipment during the financial year
2020/2021 and were issued to eight wards.
He says this
financial year, Nyong’o says the number of the recipient wards was increased to
19 with an allocation of shs 23,850,000.
Nyong’o says the purpose of sportswear
which includes uniforms and equipment is to enhance performance during training
and competition.
“In
the coming year, 80% of the funds will be allocated for talent scouting at the
wards, sub-county, and county levels. We will also give support to county teams
in terms of training and competition, while 20% will go to the procurement of sports
gear,” Nyong’o says.
He
says this will jumpstart vibrant talent identification and development across
the county, adding that one of the key provisions for talent development is
sports infrastructure.
“My
government has embarked on an aggressive infrastructure development agenda in
terms of both construction of new facilities and upgrading the old ones across
the county. For example, works at the Moi stadium are underway. This is a multi-
year project due to budget constraints,” Nyong’o further says.
Nyong’o
says currently, the County Government is in the process of procuring equipment for
six wards that had not received the equipment.
